Golf Swing Tips For Distance, Accuracy and Spin
Golfers that are aware of the technical aspects that create ideal impact between golf club and golf ball should work to develop effective physical characteristics that will generate a controlled and powerful swing to achieve the technical results they want. Understanding the factors that combine to create optimal impact with the golf ball at impact is crucial. This is because if you can understand what happens at impact, you can direct the golf ball’s flight. Then, if need be, you can make the adjustments necessary to your golf swing to create those ideal impact conditions.
Simply paying attention to the flight of the ball after impact will help you identify the personal aspects of your swing (ie the physical aspects of your body’s rotation, balance, posture and control) and help you develop a better game. Experimentation is important here. Making changes to your swing and your body can sometimes produce worse results. Knowing how to undo those changes when necessary, therefore, is a part of the process.
Making your golf club strike the ball with it’s sweet spot and sending it in the direction you want can be difficult. However, there are probably only four key factors that directly influence what happens at impact.
First, the angle of the clubface at impact is immediately obvious. Perhaps this is the biggest factor that influences the direction of the ball flight and the spin that is created (influencing the behaviour of the ball after it returns to the course.) Most basically, the clubface should be aiming towards your target. A straight clubface should also remove any spin on the ball.
Second, the angle of the clubface, both vertical and horizontal determine angle of trajectory and further influence direction. The height of the ball’s flight will influence the distance that is able to be created and may also come into play with the wind and with any obstacles in the direction you are hitting.
Third, hitting the ball with the club’s sweet spot is also important. The sweet spot is the place on the clubface that transfers the most power from your swing into the golf ball. Effective power transfer through accurate delivery of the clubface to the ball determines distance and also direction.
Finally, the speed of the clubhead at impact also influences the distribution of power from your swing into the ball and can have a bit part to play in the distance you are able to generate with your shot. A fast swing is a generated through a combination of factors, not just muscular strength. Physical flexibility, range of motion and technique all have apart to play in creating a smooth and swift golf swing.
Too often amateur golfers try to muscle the golf ball towards their target. This is simply not the way to achieve the best results in your golf. It’s the combination of the factors discussed above and the adjustments you make to your swing depending on the conditions and the lie of the ball that come together in the golf swing that create power.
Understanding the factors that influence your ball’s travel at the moment of impact and then relating this back to your individual style and swing is what counts. Cause produces effect. Get back to the cause and analyse how you are creating the optimal conditions at impact to get the best results.
